Treating Keratoconus with Intacs^®

Mark Schneider, M.D. first began treating TriCounty Eye Institute’s Keratoconus patients by inserting an Intrastromal Corneal Ring, or Intacs. The FDA has approved Intacs for the treatment of keratoconus.

Many of Dr. Schneider’s patients that have had the Intacs procedure experienced improved quality of vision, and stabilization of their cornea. Clinical outcomes data shows that the use of Intacs has slowed the progression of the disease.

The Intacs Corneal Ring is inserted by Dr. Schneider by using a femtosecond laser known as the IntraLase. This laser creates a small curved incision around the cornea so that the corneal ring can be implanted by Dr. Schneider. By using this approach scarring defects are prevented, the risk of astigmatism and distortions are reduced, and it helps to flatten the cornea.
